Ban LongKhan Suspension Bridge Reopens: Restoring Safe Access and Vital Connectivity.

[Xieng Khouang Province], January 6, 2026 – The community of Ban LongKhan, Phoukoud District, is celebrating a major milestone as the Community Livelihood Enhancement and Resilience (CLEAR) project announces the official completion and reopening of the NamKhan River Suspension Bridge on January 5, 2026.

Background and Rationale: Originally constructed in 2012, the 100-meter suspension bridge serves as a critical lifeline for the village. Over years of use, the structure had severely deteriorated, posing significant safety risks to commuters. Recognizing this urgency, the community identified the bridge renovation as their Number One Priority in the Village Development Plan submitted to the CLEAR project.

Technical Implementation: The sub-project was executed under the Contractor Model, focusing on essential structural repairs to ensure long-term safety. Key engineering works included:

  1. Replacement of the main load-bearing cables.
  2. Replacement of the wooden decking structure.
  3. Installation of full-length guardrail nets (100m) on both sides of the bridge to prevent falls.

Budget and Timeline: Construction commenced on November 20, 2025, and was successfully completed on January 5, 2026. The total investment value stands at 438,386,619 LAK, demonstrating a strong partnership:

  • CLEAR Project Contribution: 403,749,119 LAK (covering construction costs and Village Implementation Team administration).
  • Community Contribution: 34,637,500 LAK.

Impact on Livelihoods: The renovated bridge delivers immediate benefits to Ban Long Khan:

  • Safety & Access: It ensures safe, year-round passage for students attending school and patients visiting the health center, eliminating risks during the rainy season and high-water events.
  • Economic Connectivity: The bridge facilitates the efficient transport of agricultural produce (rice, corn) and other goods between the village and the district. This improved connectivity reduces transportation costs and time, directly contributing to increased household income and local economic resilience.
