Community Livelihoods Enhancement and Resilience (CLEAR) Project

UXO Survey and Clearance Conducted Prior to Implementation of CRI Activities in Target Villages

The CLEAR Project has carried out unexploded ordnance (UXO) survey and clearance activities in selected target villages to ensure safety prior to the implementation of Community-Resilient Infrastructure (CRI) activities. These preparatory actions are essential to safeguard communities, workers, and project assets, and to ensure full compliance with environmental and social standards.
The UXO survey and clearance operations covered target villages in Xepon District and Nong District of Savannakhet Province; Samouy District and Ta-Oi District of Salavan Province; and Dakcheung District of Sekong Province. The activities were implemented through close coordination among licensed UXO clearance teams, the project’s Environmental and Social (ES) team, district authorities, and village leaders.
The scope of UXO work included systematic survey of proposed CRI sites, access roads, excavation areas, and other supporting locations where construction activities are planned. Where UXO risks were identified, clearance was conducted in accordance with national UXO standards and approved operating procedures. Construction activities will only commence after formal confirmation that the areas are safe.
In parallel, community briefings and consultations were organized to inform village leaders and residents about UXO risks, safety procedures, and key do’s and don’ts before and during CRI implementation. These engagements helped strengthen community awareness, build trust, and promote shared responsibility for safety.
The CLEAR Project reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that all CRI activities are implemented in a safe, responsible, and sustainable manner. UXO risk management remains a critical prerequisite for project implementation, ensuring that development benefits are delivered without compromising the safety and well-being of communities.
